Wales Gene Park is funded by Welsh Government, through Health and Care Research Wales, as an infrastructure support group which is hosted by Cardiff University. Our mission is to promote and facilitate Welsh medical genetic and genomic research and its application to improve health and wealth in Wales and beyond. Also, We aim to engage the public and health professionals to improve understanding of the opportunities and challenges arising through genetics and genomics, and work to support the implementation of the Welsh Governments Genomics for Precision medicine strategy. We therefore bring together expertise in genetics and genomics research, whilst providing access to competitive and flexible Next Generation Sequencing (NGS) using instrumentation throughout Cardiff University and the Wales NHS AWMGS lab, combined with expert bioinformatic support for researchers in Wales. Further to the expertise within Wales Gene Park, the 288 cores of compute and 1.5 petabyte of storage housed within the Cardiff University Advanced Research Computing at Cardiff (ARCCA) facility, constitutes the main Wales Gene Park asset. The provision of these technologies by the Wales Gene Park Genomic Facility ensures that a greater proportion of externally awarded research funding is spent in Wales.
