The ECN supports the detection, interpretation and forecasting of environmental change and its impacts on soils, waters and biodiversity across a range of terrestrial and freshwater habitats. It is the UK’s official Long Term Ecosystem Research (LTER) network and the only UK network making high frequency co-located measurements of the terrestrial natural environment at an ecosystem scale. Measurements and site maintenance are sponsored by several institutes and agencies. Data are collected from a wide range of physical, chemical and biological core measurements supervised by experienced site managers, following standard ECN protocols, and are submitted to the the ECN Central Coordination Unit (CCU) for verification and inclusion in the ECN database. Terrestrial ECN sites also function as platforms for environmental research, providing access, assistance and high quality long-term data to researchers from within CEH, and the wider research community.
