ESRIC provides an open access platform for researchers from anywhere in the world to access state-of-the-art optical microscope systems as well as the expertise to drive innovative and high impact research. The initiative integrates the excellent engineering and physical science expertise within Heriot-Watt University with the leading-edge biomedical capability at the University of Edinburgh with the aim to accelerate discovery and encourage collaboration. ESRIC runs a PhD programme and an annual super-resolution summer school which, now in its 5th year, is attended by researchers from across the world and is taught by experts in the field of microscopy. ESRIC houses systems which are not available in other Universities in Scotland, is rare in its breadth of expertise across disciplines and the attendance of the summer school by researchers from as far as Australia and New Zealand demonstrate its global standing. ESRIC was recognized with the Times Higher Education STEM Research Project of the Year 2017/18 for its prolific results, impacts and outreach.
