The John Rylands Research Institute promotes research in the humanities and sciences using the astonishingly rich, world-class Special Collections of the University of Manchester Library. It is a dynamic community of researchers, curators, conservators and imaging specialists.
The Institute acts as a catalyst and focus for world-leading research, helping to draw the best minds to Manchester and establishing it as one of the great centres for the study of textual, material and visual cultures. Our research incorporates new approaches in digital humanities and curation, as well as scientific techniques in the study and conservation of heritage materials.
We invest in high-quality research projects which make use of the Special Collections, and provide access, resources, expertise and related services to the wider UK research and innovation community outside the infrastructure host (i.e. the Univeristy of Manchester), by collaborating with established researchers and nurturing the next generation of scholars through our support for early career researchers.
