Historical Texts is a service which brings together in one platform over 450,000 15th-19th Century digitised texts from historically significant collections which were purchased by Jisc in perpetuity on behalf of the UK university sector as well as other digital archival collections of text-based material. The collections include ProQuest Early English Books Online (EEBO), Cengage Eighteenth Century Collections Online (ECCO), the British Library 19th Century digitised books and 15m pages of UK 19th Century medical history books. The service is available on subscription to all UK Higher Education institutions, and some of the collections are also available on open access. Historical Texts is used by academics, researchers and students primarily within the arts and humanities to gain easy access to otherwise difficult to access primary source material. Researchers can search across all data sets and interrogate millions of pages of digitised material which would otherwise be impossible in an analogue context. Users can download texts and images, as well as full data sets through an API, search and consult transcripts of texts, and explore the content through a number of innovative visualisation tools. The importance of this service lies in the fact that it aggregates in one place a number of large scale data sets. This makes the work of researchers much quicker and efficient and supports innovative enquiries into digital archival collections which would otherwise not be possible.
