BLPES builds, curates and makes publicly accessible an international collection of material to support research and teaching in social science. It consists of over 4 million items in physical and digital form including books, journals, pamphlets, official publications, statistical series, archives, manuscripts and museum objects, with associated services to enable their discovery and use. Its research objective is the facilitation of social science scholarship through the curation of unique and distinctive and related secondary materials, along with the development of innovative services to access and interrogate the collections and to preserve and disseminate subsequent research outputs. Its importance lies in the size and disciplinary focus of its collections which gives it a role as a national centre for the support of social science research and is recognised by UKRI as one of five national research libraries. It is the custodian of significant collections of unique or otherwise rare social science research materials with particular strengths in British political and economic history, social activism, women’s equality, LGBT issues, the peace movement and internationalism, inter-governmental organisations, foreign government publications and statistical series.
