Quantum Computing and Simulation Hub

Submitted by adi.sheward-hi… on Tue, 02/01/2022 - 09:47

The Quantum Computing and Simulation Hub (aka QCS Hub) is a collaboration between 17 UK universities and is one of four hubs within the UK National Quantum Technologies Programme.

Working with an extensive network of academic, industrial and governmental partners, we are focused on the critical research challenges for quantum computing, across a broad range of hardware and software disciplines.

As well as addressing the technical challenges in providing quantum computing and simulation at...

Bodleian Libraries, University of Oxford

Submitted by amy_warner_may on Mon, 07/22/2019 - 11:59

The Bodleian Libraries mission is to provide an excellent service to support the learning, teaching and research objectives of the University of Oxford; and to develop and maintain access to Oxford's unique collections for the benefit of scholarship and society. The Bodleian has been collecting material for more than 400 years and currently holds more than 12 million printed items, over 80,000 e-journals, and some 56,000 linear metres of outstanding special collections. These include rare books...

5G Brighton Testbed

Submitted by dritan_kaleshi on Mon, 07/22/2019 - 11:59
5G is set to transform many industries and our society and, with its accelerating deployment and non-stop development, it will eventually require traditional business models to be rethought. Digital Catapult’s aim is to accelerate the development and testing of innovative business models that exploit, and push the boundaries of 5G, as a crucial component of advanced digital infrastructure. In Brighton we have collaborated with Wired Sussex, the University of Brighton and Brighton Dome &...

Diamond Light Source Ltd

Submitted by dominic_semple on Mon, 07/22/2019 - 11:59

Diamond Light Source is the UK's national synchrotron light facility. It works like a giant microscope, harnessing the power of electrons to produce bright light that scientists can use to study anything from fossils to jet engines and from viruses to vaccines. The machine accelerates electrons to near the speed of light which then give off light 10 billion times brighter than the sun. These bright beams are then directed off into laboratories/experimental stations known as ‘beamlines’. Here...

FAAM - Airborne Laboratory

Submitted by alan_woolley on Mon, 07/22/2019 - 11:59

The FAAM facility supports a specially-adapted research aircraft capable of carrying a payload of up to 4 tonnes and operating between 15m and 10,670 m altitude with a range of up to 3,500 km. The aircraft itself comprises Europe’s largest flying atmospheric laboratory, a heavily-modified BAE146-301 aircraft (Serial E3001) registered with the UK Civil Aviation Authority as G-LUXE. The aircraft carries a large and versatile fit of instrumentation to characterise processes throughout the...

ISIS

Submitted by robert_mcgreevy on Mon, 07/22/2019 - 11:59

ISIS is the UK national facility for neutron scattering and muon spectroscopy, providing specialist research capabilities over a wide range of scientific disciplines, from life sciences to engineering. These techniques can only be provided by large central facilities; there are no laboratory based equivalents. ISIS is an accelerator based neutron/muon source; there are only 4 similar facilities operating in the world. Neutrons have a number of specific characteristics that makes them highly...

Large Anechoic Chamber

Submitted by john_fithyan on Mon, 07/22/2019 - 11:59

The Large Anechoic Room at ISVR is one of the largest in the country. The anechoic chamber is a room in which the walls, floor and ceiling are lined with sound absorbing material, usually foam or glass-fibre wedges. The lining prevents the reflection of sound from the room boundaries so that ‘free-field’ conditions exist. The room sounds very ‘dead’. Sound measurements are not influenced by the room surfaces, and an anechoic room is an ideal environment for many standard tests such as the...

Large Reverberation Chamber

Submitted by john_fithyan on Mon, 07/22/2019 - 11:59

A reverberation chamber has hard surfaces which reflect sound. The sound from a machine or other noise source is reflected many times to produce a non-directional or ‘diffuse’ sound field within the chamber. The sound power emitted from a machine can then be determined from the sound level in the chamber and from the characteristics of the room such as its volume, surface area and reverberation time. Unlike the sound pressure level produced by a machine or piece of equipment, the sound power...
